Medical Waste Autoclave with Shredder – ToronMW™ AS
On-Site Medical Waste Sterilization and Volume Reduction
The ToronMW™ AS Medical Waste Autoclave with Shredder provides an integrated solution for treating infectious medical waste at the point of generation. Combining mechanical shredding with saturated steam sterilization in a sealed vessel, the system reduces regulated healthcare waste into unrecognizable, non-infectious material suitable for disposal through approved municipal waste channels. Designed for hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and centralized medical waste treatment facilities, the system processes waste through an upper shredding chamber before transferring it to a lower chamber for steam sterilization. The treated output is dry, unrecognizable, and non-infectious.
An automated treatment cycle integrates waste loading, shredding, steam sterilization, condensation, vacuum drying, and discharge, minimizing direct operator contact with untreated waste. The enclosed chamber design helps contain aerosols, odors, and condensate throughout the treatment process. With a volume reduction rate of 60–80%, the ToronMW™ AS can reduce waste storage requirements, collection frequency, and transportation costs while minimizing the risks associated with off-site transport of untreated infectious waste. Each cycle generates temperature and pressure records to support process monitoring and regulatory documentation.
The ToronMW™ AS series offers seven capacity options ranging from 100 L to 2,500 L per cycle, accommodating the waste treatment requirements of small healthcare facilities and large centralized processing plants. Smaller models feature an integrated electric steam generator and water purification system, making them suitable for facilities without a central steam supply. Higher-capacity models can connect to an existing plant steam system. The process operates without chemical sterilizing agents or radiation and is designed to avoid generating additional hazardous liquid or solid waste streams, providing a practical solution for on-site medical waste sterilization and volume reduction.

Standards and Microbial Inactivation
Medical waste treatment systems are evaluated according to their demonstrated ability to inactivate microorganisms and meet applicable regulatory requirements. The ToronMW™ AS uses saturated steam sterilization, with treatment performance requiring validation against the relevant microbial inactivation criteria and local regulatory requirements.
-
STAATT Level IV: The State and Territorial Association on Alternative Treatment Technologies (STAATT) established microbial inactivation criteria for alternative medical waste treatment technologies. Level IV is commonly associated with a minimum 8-log₁₀ reduction in microbial population, subject to the applicable validation protocol.
Approval of alternative medical waste treatment technologies depends on the requirements of the relevant state, provincial, or municipal authority. Validation procedures, biological indicators, documentation, and acceptance criteria may vary by jurisdiction. Before commissioning, facilities should arrange site-specific performance validation using biological indicators and protocols accepted by the applicable regulatory authority. Confirm the required treatment level and validation criteria with the regulator before claiming compliance.

Theory and Method
The ToronMW™ AS Medical Waste Autoclave with Shredder uses saturated steam sterilization to inactivate microorganisms through moist heat. When steam condenses on cooler waste surfaces, it releases latent heat that transfers energy into the material. This heat denatures essential microbial proteins and damages cellular structures and nucleic acids, helping destroy vegetative bacteria, fungi, viruses, mycobacteria, and bacterial spores when validated time and temperature conditions are achieved. Compared with dry-heat treatment, saturated steam provides efficient heat transfer and can achieve microbial inactivation at lower temperatures and shorter exposure times.
Steam pressure and temperature are directly related under saturated conditions. Depending on the operating parameters, steam pressures in the range of 0.2–0.3 MPa can correspond to temperatures above the commonly used 121°C sterilization benchmark. Higher-temperature cycles, such as those operating around 134°C, can reduce the exposure time required for effective treatment when supported by appropriate process validation. Air removal is essential because trapped air reduces heat transfer and can prevent steam from reaching all waste surfaces. The system uses air evacuation and controlled steam treatment to support effective heat penetration throughout the load.
Integrated shredding before sterilization distinguishes the ToronMW™ AS from conventional medical waste autoclaves that treat intact waste loads. Waste bags and compacted materials can restrict steam penetration and create cold spots within the load. Mechanical shredding breaks the waste into smaller fragments, increases exposed surface area, and helps reduce trapped air pockets, supporting more uniform steam contact and heat distribution. Shredding also reduces waste volume and can render sharps and recognizable clinical items unidentifiable. Effective treatment must still be confirmed through validated operating cycles and appropriate biological indicators, while final disposal must follow the applicable local medical waste regulations.

Medical Waste Autoclave Treatment Cycle Sequence
The ToronMW™ AS Medical Waste Autoclave with Shredder integrates waste loading, mechanical size reduction, steam sterilization, condensation, vacuum drying, and discharge into an automated treatment sequence.
-
Loading: Medical waste enters the upper chamber, and the vessel closes to establish an enclosed treatment environment.
-
Shredding: A push-feeding mechanism directs waste into the twin-shaft shredder, which reduces it into smaller fragments that fall into the lower chamber. Automatic jam detection and reverse operation help clear obstructions and maintain material flow.
-
Steam Sterilization: Saturated steam enters the treatment chamber to expose the shredded waste to controlled temperature and pressure conditions. Operating parameters, such as temperatures of 134–138°C and pressures of 0.2–0.3 MPa, must be confirmed against the model specifications and validated treatment cycle.
-
Condensation: Residual steam condenses as the treatment phase ends, helping reduce excess moisture and prepare the load for subsequent drying.
-
Vacuum Drying: A vacuum system removes residual vapor and moisture, helping produce a dry treated output while reducing residual odors.
-
Discharging: Once the cycle reaches its specified completion and safety conditions, the discharge door opens for removal of the treated material. Final waste classification and disposal must comply with applicable local regulations and validated treatment requirements.
