Medical Waste Treatment Systems

Steam-Based Medical Waste Treatment, Chemical-Free Processing Validated by Cycle Records

Medical waste treatment systems provide an effective solution for processing infectious waste from hospitals, laboratories, healthcare facilities, and clinical environments. Using saturated steam, these systems inactivate harmful microorganisms without chemical additives, combustion, or radiation. Treatment performance can be assessed against applicable STAATT inactivation criteria, while recorded temperature and pressure data support cycle monitoring, validation, and regulatory documentation.

Designed for hospitals, laboratories, medical waste contractors, and centralized treatment facilities, medical waste treatment equipment helps reduce the handling and transportation of untreated infectious waste. On-site or near-source treatment can minimize temporary storage requirements, reduce waste collection frequency, and lower the risks associated with transporting infectious materials on public roads.

Our range of medical waste treatment systems accommodates different operational requirements, with processing capacities ranging from 100 L to 9,600 L per cycle. These solutions support efficient infectious waste management across healthcare facilities and specialized waste treatment operations.

Applications

Steam-based medical waste treatment systems support healthcare facilities and waste management operations that require a reliable method of treating regulated infectious waste without incineration.

  • Hospitals and Medical Centers: Treat sharps, dressings, laboratory cultures, and isolation waste on-site, reducing the need to store untreated infectious materials between collections.

  • Central Treatment Plants and Waste Contractors: Process medical waste collected from multiple facilities across a city or region, with system capacities suited to high-volume batch operations.

  • Clinical and Diagnostic Laboratories: Treat culture plates, specimen containers, and biological materials before disposal, subject to applicable waste management requirements.

  • Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Facilities: Process contaminated production consumables, filter media, and laboratory waste through documented treatment cycles.

  • Veterinary and Animal Research Facilities: Treat contaminated bedding, animal tissues, and laboratory consumables requiring sterilization and, where necessary, size reduction.

  • Outpatient Clinics and Dialysis Centers: Process dialyzers, tubing, and contaminated disposable medical supplies using systems suited to smaller facilities.

  • Quarantine and Emergency Response Facilities: Manage regulated medical waste at ports, border stations, temporary medical facilities, and field hospitals where municipal waste infrastructure may be limited.

Medical Waste Treatment Systems

Torontech offers two medical waste treatment system configurations, designed for different processing volumes, loading methods, and waste handling requirements.

Medical Waste Autoclave with Shredder (ToronMW™ AS)

The ToronMW™ AS integrates waste shredding and steam sterilization within a single automated system. Medical waste enters the upper chamber, passes through a twin-shaft shredder, and moves into the lower chamber for steam treatment at 134°C to 138°C. Integrated shredding increases waste exposure to steam and reduces the size and recognizability of treated materials.

Seven models provide processing capacities from 100 L to 2,500 L per cycle, with a reported volume reduction of 60% to 80%. This configuration is suitable for healthcare facilities and waste treatment operations that require integrated size reduction and sterilization.

High-Vacuum Medical Waste Autoclave (ToronMW™ A)

The ToronMW™ A is a horizontal, bin-loaded medical waste autoclave designed for high-volume batch processing. Its pre-vacuum system reaches -0.9 bar within five minutes, removing trapped air to support steam penetration throughout bagged waste loads. Automatic bin loading and unloading help streamline material handling, while an integrated deodorization tower treats process exhaust.

Five configurations offer capacities from 800 L to 9,600 L per cycle, with a stated processing rate of up to 1,400 kg per hour. This system is suited to centralized medical waste treatment plants and facilities handling large quantities of collected infectious waste.

How to Choose the Right Medical Waste Treatment System

Selecting the appropriate medical waste treatment equipment depends on waste volume, site infrastructure, loading requirements, and applicable treatment regulations.

  • For on-site medical waste treatment: Consider the ToronMW™ AS, which combines shredding and steam sterilization in one integrated system.

  • For centralized treatment plants: Consider the ToronMW™ A, with larger chamber capacities and automated bin handling for high-volume operations.

  • When waste size reduction is required: Choose a shredder-equipped configuration to reduce waste volume and make treated items less recognizable. Confirm that the resulting process meets applicable regulatory requirements.

  • When processing waste collected from multiple facilities: A bin-loaded high-vacuum autoclave can simplify loading, unloading, and batch management.

  • For facilities without an existing steam supply: Evaluate smaller shredder-equipped models with an integrated electric steam generator and water purification package.

  • For installations requiring exhaust treatment: Consider a high-vacuum autoclave with a deodorization tower to manage process exhaust and help control odors.

  • For densely packed or bagged waste: A high-vacuum system can help remove trapped air and improve steam penetration. Proper cycle validation remains essential to verify treatment effectiveness throughout the load.
