Oxygen Transmission Rate Tester (Single-Cell) – ToronOTR™ 1
Single-Cell Coulometric OTR Analyzer for Film and Package Testing
The ToronOTR™ 1 is a single-cell oxygen transmission rate tester designed to measure the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of flexible films, sheeting, and finished packages. It uses a coulometric sensor with an equal-pressure test method to provide an absolute measurement of oxygen flux without gas-specific calibration. With one measurement cell and a compact benchtop design, the ToronOTR™ 1 provides a practical solution for laboratories introducing oxygen barrier testing. The system supports testing methods including ASTM D3985 and ISO 15105-2 for packaging, food, pharmaceutical, and materials applications.
The ToronOTR™ 1 oxygen transmission rate analyzer can test both flat film specimens and complete packages, allowing laboratories to evaluate oxygen barrier performance during material development as well as finished-package quality control. High-purity nitrogen transports permeated oxygen to the coulometric sensor, while digital carrier-flow control maintains consistent sweep conditions throughout the test. Controlled relative humidity helps reproduce specified environmental conditions, which is important because moisture can significantly affect oxygen barrier performance in many high-barrier polymer materials. A 24-bit delta-sigma converter provides high-resolution signal measurement for applications involving the low oxygen transmission levels associated with high-barrier films.
One-button operation initiates automated testing, while real-time data curves allow operators to monitor oxygen flux, temperature, and relative humidity throughout the test. Traceable reference-film calibration supports measurement verification and documentation for quality and audit requirements. Built-in overload protection helps safeguard the pressure, oxygen, and temperature circuits during operation.
The ToronOTR™ 1 Single-Cell Oxygen Transmission Rate Tester is suited to food packaging, pharmaceutical packaging, flexible packaging, polymer materials, quality control, and research and development laboratories requiring reliable oxygen barrier measurements in a compact benchtop configuration.

Theory and Method
The coulometric sensor method used by the ToronOTR™ 1 is an equal-pressure, or isostatic, technique for measuring oxygen transmission through films and packaging materials. The method determines oxygen transmission by measuring the oxygen that permeates through a specimen into an oxygen-free carrier stream. The test specimen separates the diffusion cell into upstream and downstream sides maintained at the same total pressure. High-purity oxygen flows across the upstream surface, while dry, oxygen-free nitrogen sweeps the downstream surface. With equal total pressure on both sides, oxygen permeation is driven by the difference in oxygen partial pressure across the specimen.
During testing, oxygen first dissolves into the material surface, diffuses through the polymer structure, and then desorbs into the nitrogen carrier stream. The carrier gas transports the permeated oxygen to the coulometric sensor, which operates as an electrochemical cell. Oxygen molecules reaching the sensor undergo reduction at the cathode and generate a predictable electrical charge. The resulting electrical current is proportional to the oxygen flux passing through the specimen. This provides an absolute measurement based on Faraday's law, rather than a relative measurement that depends on gas-specific calibration.
The instrument calculates the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) using the stabilized sensor current, carrier-gas flow rate, and exposed test area for film specimens. For finished-package testing, the calculation can be based on the complete package under the applicable test configuration. Controlled relative humidity is important for materials such as EVOH and nylon, where oxygen barrier performance can change significantly with moisture content. The ToronOTR™ 1 conditions the gas streams to the specified relative humidity to support controlled and repeatable testing conditions.
The single-cell configuration measures one specimen at a time, providing a focused testing setup for laboratory OTR measurements. An optional temperature controller maintains the measurement cell at a defined temperature, supporting isothermal testing when controlled temperature conditions are required.
