Oxygen Transmission Rate Tester (3-Cell) – ToronOTR™ 3
Three-Chamber Coulometric Oxygen Transmission Rate Tester for Film and Package Testing
The ToronOTR™ 3 is a 3-cell oxygen transmission rate tester designed to measure the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of flexible films, sheets, and finished packages. It uses the coulometric sensor method with an equal-pressure test configuration to measure oxygen permeation directly without gas-specific calibration. Three independent test chambers allow three specimens to be tested simultaneously, increasing testing capacity for quality control and R&D laboratories. The instrument supports recognized methods including ASTM D3985 and ISO 15105-2, making it suitable for packaging, food, pharmaceutical, and materials testing applications.
The ToronOTR™ 3 can evaluate both flat film specimens and complete packages, allowing laboratories to assess oxygen barrier performance from material development through finished-package quality control. A water-bath temperature control system maintains the three test chambers at the selected temperature from 5°C to 95°C. Controlled relative humidity enables testing under defined environmental conditions, which is important for oxygen barrier materials whose permeation characteristics can vary with moisture. High-purity nitrogen transports permeated oxygen to the coulometric sensor, while digital carrier-gas flow control helps maintain stable test conditions.
With automated one-button operation, the ToronOTR™ 3 simplifies routine OTR testing and reduces manual intervention. Real-time data curves display oxygen flux, temperature, and humidity during the test, giving operators direct visibility into test progress. Traceable reference-film calibration supports reliable measurement verification and documentation, while integrated overload protection helps safeguard the pressure, oxygen, and temperature control systems.
The ToronOTR™ 3 3-Cell Oxygen Transmission Rate Tester is suited to laboratories that need simultaneous oxygen barrier testing of multiple samples across food packaging, pharmaceutical packaging, flexible packaging, polymer materials, quality control, and research and development applications.

Theory and Method
The coulometric sensor method used by the ToronOTR™ 3 is an equal-pressure (isostatic) technique for measuring oxygen transmission rate (OTR) by monitoring oxygen that permeates through a specimen into an oxygen-free carrier stream. In each test cell, the specimen separates the chamber into upstream and downstream sides maintained at the same total pressure. High-purity oxygen flows across the upstream surface, while dry nitrogen sweeps the downstream surface. With equal total pressure on both sides, the oxygen partial-pressure difference provides the driving force for permeation.
Oxygen first dissolves into the film, then diffuses through the polymer structure before desorbing into the nitrogen carrier stream. The carrier gas transports the permeated oxygen to the coulometric sensor, an electrochemical detection cell in which oxygen undergoes a reduction reaction that generates a measurable electrical current. Because the generated charge has a defined relationship with the amount of oxygen reaching the sensor, the measurement is based on Faraday's law and provides a direct determination of oxygen flux rather than a relative measurement requiring gas-specific calibration.
The system determines the OTR for each specimen using the steady-state sensor current, carrier-gas flow rate, and exposed test area. For finished-package testing, the measurement can instead be based on the complete package being evaluated. Water-bath temperature control maintains all three test chambers at a consistent temperature, while controlled relative humidity conditions the gas streams to reproduce specified moisture conditions. This is particularly relevant for polymers such as EVOH and nylon, whose oxygen barrier performance can vary with humidity.
The three test cells operate in parallel and provide independent measurements for each specimen. This configuration allows three OTR values to be generated from a single test setup, supporting higher sample throughput for packaging development, quality control, and materials research.
