Battery Material Bulk Bag Recycling Line – ToronLi-ion™ MBB
The ToronLi-ion™ MBB bulk bag recycling line converts used flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs) into two valuable outputs: recovered material powder and clean polypropylene fabric. The fully integrated process combines shredding, washing, dewatering, and packaging in an automated sequence, from material feeding to final discharge. Battery material manufacturing facilities generate large quantities of these bags because cathode precursors, graphite, and lithium salts are commonly supplied in FIBCs. Residual powder trapped in the woven fabric retains significant material value. This recycling line recovers that material rather than allowing it to leave the facility with discarded packaging.
Woven polypropylene presents different processing challenges than plastic film and rigid plastics. Its tear-resistant construction makes it difficult to shred, while loose fabric can wrap around rotating shafts instead of passing through the cutting chamber. The ToronLi-ion™ MBB addresses these challenges with a cutting mechanism configured for multi-layer woven structures. It reduces complete bags into smaller fragments that can be processed effectively during subsequent washing. Opening the woven structure exposes trapped powder and creates the conditions needed for effective material recovery.
Automated operation extends from the feeding point through final discharge, minimizing operator contact with residual powder and maintaining consistent output across production shifts. The enclosed, controllable process manages material throughout the entire recycling sequence. This containment is particularly valuable for battery raw material facilities, where recovered powder can return to production instead of entering the waste stream. The recovered polypropylene fabric exits the line ready for baling, commercial sale, or further extrusion into regranulate.

-
Integrated Packaging Stage: Packs the cleaned polypropylene fabric at the end of the line, preparing it for storage, transportation, or sale without requiring a separate handling operation.
-
Resource Recovery Focus: Captures both recoverable material fractions, increasing the proportion of incoming packaging waste converted into usable products.
Theory and Method
Bulk bag recycling begins with the mechanical challenges associated with woven fabric. FIBCs are manufactured from multiple layers of woven polypropylene tape, creating a durable structure capable of carrying loads of up to one ton without tearing. This strength also makes the material resistant to conventional cutting methods. Loose fabric can wrap around rotating shafts instead of feeding smoothly into the cutting mechanism. For this reason, bulk bag processing requires a cutting-based approach rather than the impact-based methods commonly used for rigid materials. Shredding the bags into smaller fragments also opens the woven structure and increases the exposed surface area available for washing.
The washing stage addresses two different forms of powder adhesion. Fine particles become mechanically trapped between the woven tapes, while electrostatic attraction causes smaller particles to cling to fiber surfaces. Water alone cannot effectively remove both types of contamination. The washing process therefore combines immersion with agitation and friction generated as the shredded fabric fragments tumble against one another. As the powder separates from the fabric, it disperses into the wash water and is subsequently recovered through settling. Mineral and battery material powders have considerably greater density than the surrounding liquid, allowing them to separate under gravity. Polypropylene, by comparison, has a density of approximately 0.91 grams per cubic centimeter, lower than water at 1.00 grams per cubic centimeter. This density difference supports the separation of the plastic fabric from the recovered powder.
Dewatering takes advantage of another important characteristic of polypropylene: its hydrophobic nature and extremely low water absorption. Instead of penetrating the polymer, moisture remains on the surfaces of the shredded fragments as a thin film. Mechanical processing removes this surface moisture directly through methods such as squeezing or centrifugal force. This approach avoids the additional drying energy that would be necessary for polymers capable of absorbing water. Achieving low residual moisture is important for subsequent processing because it affects bale weight accuracy and determines whether the recovered polypropylene flake can proceed directly to extrusion.

Machine Line-Up
The ToronLi-ion™ MBB recycling line consists of the following integrated modules. Each section outlines the module's purpose, operating principle, and available technical parameters.
1. Feeding System
Used bulk bags are placed onto an inclined infeed conveyor, which transports them into the shredder hopper at a controlled feeding rate. Regulated material delivery keeps the shredder within its operating load range and prevents sudden load increases that could occur if multiple bags were fed into the hopper at once.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Function | Meters used bags into the shredding stage at a controlled rate |
| Conveyor Type | Inclined belt conveyor |
| Feed Material | Whole FIBCs, jumbo bags, and woven bulk packaging |
| Discharge | Direct into shredder hopper |
| Configuration | Sized to line throughput and bag dimensions |
2. Shredding System
The shredder cuts complete bulk bags into smaller fragments. Since woven polypropylene is designed to withstand tearing, the cutting mechanism is configured specifically for multi-layer fabric rather than plastic film or rigid materials. In addition to reducing material size, shredding opens the woven structure and exposes trapped powder, allowing the subsequent washing stage to access and recover the residual material.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Function | Size reduction of whole bags into washable fragments |
| Target Material | Multi-layer woven polypropylene fabric |
| Cutting Approach | Shearing action suited to tear-resistant woven structures |
| Process Purpose | Opens the weave and exposes trapped material for washing |
| Discharge | To washing stage |
3. Washing System
The washing stage removes residual product from the polypropylene fabric. Shredded fragments are immersed in water and agitated, creating friction between tumbling pieces that dislodges powder trapped within the woven structure. The released material disperses into the wash water. Polypropylene remains afloat while the denser powder settles, allowing the difference in material density to support effective separation.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Function | Removal of residual powder and contamination from fabric fragments |
| Method | Immersion combined with agitation and inter-fragment friction |
| Separation Basis | Density difference between floating polypropylene and settling powder |
| Stage Count | Set to contamination level and output specification |
| Output | Cleaned fabric fragments and powder-laden wash water |
4. Powder Recovery
Powder released during the washing process is collected and discharged through a separate product stream. This material recovery capability distinguishes battery material bulk bag recycling from conventional plastic washing, as the recovered powder returned to production can hold greater value than the cleaned polypropylene fabric.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Function | Capture of residual material powder released during washing |
| Separation Basis | Settling of dense powder from the wash medium |
| Output Form | Recovered powder fraction for reuse or onward processing |
| Process Purpose | Converts residue that would otherwise leave with effluent into product |
5. Dewatering System
Mechanical dewatering removes surface moisture from the washed polypropylene fragments. Because polypropylene absorbs very little water, moisture remains as a thin film on the fragment surfaces rather than penetrating the material. Mechanical removal eliminates this moisture without the energy consumption associated with oven drying of water-absorbent polymers.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Function | Removal of surface water from washed fabric fragments |
| Method | Mechanical dewatering |
| Material Property Exploited | Hydrophobic polypropylene retains only surface moisture |
| Output Condition | Low residual moisture fabric ready for packing |
| Process Benefit | Reduces drying energy and stabilizes packed bale weight |
6. Packaging System
The cleaned and dewatered polypropylene fabric is packaged at the final stage of the line. Integrated packaging eliminates the need for separate material handling and produces uniform units ready for storage, transportation, or commercial sale.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Function | Packing of recovered polypropylene fabric into transportable units |
| Position | Final stage of the process line |
| Output | Packed recovered fabric ready for storage, sale, or extrusion |
| Process Benefit | Removes separate downstream handling of loose material |
7. Control and Automation System
The entire line operates under automated control, from initial material feeding to final discharge. Centralized operation maintains consistent processing across shifts while keeping the material contained throughout the recycling sequence. This is particularly important for facilities where recovered powder is a valuable product rather than a waste material.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Function | Sequence control and monitoring across the full line |
| Coverage | Feeding through discharging |
| Operating Mode | Automatic, continuous |
| Operator Involvement | Minimal manual intervention required |
| Process Benefit | Consistent output and controlled material containment |
