Battery Recycling Lines

Three Lines for Three Feedstocks: Spent Cells, Electrode Scrap, and Raw Material Packaging

Battery recycling lines recover valuable, reusable materials from lithium-ion waste that might otherwise end up in landfills. Torontech offers three ToronLi-ion™ configurations, each designed for a specific feedstock. Cell manufacturers, recycling facilities, and material refiners use these systems to separate metals, powders, and polymers into distinct output fractions. All three lines operate under centralized PLC control.

The feedstock determines the appropriate processing method. Whole battery cells require crushing in an inert atmosphere, followed by thermal treatment and sorting. Coated electrode scrap requires binder removal and foil granulation, while woven packaging materials undergo shredding, washing, and dewatering. Selecting a line that matches the input material is essential for achieving the desired recovery rates and output purity.

Applications

Battery recycling lines support the entire battery material lifecycle, from manufacturing scrap recovery to the processing of end-of-life batteries.

  • Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling: Processes retired traction battery packs, modules, and individual cells to recover separated metal and powder fractions.

  • Cell Manufacturing Scrap Recovery: Recovers value from coating rejects, slitting trim, and off-specification electrode materials for return to the supply chain.

  • Black Mass Production: Provides hydrometallurgical refiners with screened cathode and anode powders featuring consistent particle sizes.

  • Consumer Electronics Battery Recovery: Processes mobile phone, laptop, and portable electronic device batteries collected through mixed waste streams.

  • Energy Storage Decommissioning: Handles retired batteries from grid-scale and commercial energy storage systems at the end of their service life.

  • Copper and Aluminum Recovery: Separates and produces metal granules through air classification and specific gravity sorting.

  • Raw Material Packaging Recovery: Recovers residual powder and polypropylene fabric from used bulk bags.

  • Waste Management Contractors: Enables in-house lithium battery treatment, reducing the need to transport cells to third-party processors.

Battery Recycling Line Range

The three ToronLi-ion™ lines address different stages of the battery material lifecycle. Facilities processing multiple waste streams can operate the corresponding systems alongside one another.

Lithium-ion Battery Recycling System (ToronLi-ion™)

The flagship system processes spent battery cells, modules, and packs at capacities ranging from 500 to 2,000 kg/h. Coarse crushing takes place inside a sealed four-shaft chamber that supports nitrogen filling, allowing charged cells to be shredded in a low-oxygen environment.

Subsequent drying, low-temperature cracking, screening, air sorting, and gravity sorting separate the processed materials into black mass, copper granules, aluminum granules, separator film, and casing material.

Lithium-Ion Electrode Scrap Recycling Line (ToronLi-ion™ ESR)

The ToronLi-ion™ ESR line processes coated cathode and anode sheets, pole pieces, and laminate offcuts rather than assembled battery cells. Thermal treatment decomposes the polymer binder that attaches the electrode coating to the foil. A fine crusher then separates the powder while granulating the copper and aluminum current collectors.

Supplier data indicates a recovery rate exceeding 95 percent for reusable materials.

Battery Material Bulk Bag Recycling Line (ToronLi-ion™ MBB)

The ToronLi-ion™ MBB line recovers materials from battery production packaging. Used flexible intermediate bulk containers undergo shredding, washing, dewatering, and packaging to produce two output streams: residual material powder and clean polypropylene fabric.

Facilities receiving cathode precursors, graphite, and lithium salts in bulk bags can use this system to recover residual powders that would otherwise be discarded with the packaging.

How to Choose the Right Battery Recycling Line

  • For Spent Cells, Modules, and EV Packs: Select the ToronLi-ion™ system, which incorporates inert-atmosphere crushing and pyrolysis stages required for processing charged cells.

  • For Coated Electrode Sheets and Pole Piece Scrap: Choose the ESR line, which focuses on binder removal and foil granulation instead of dismantling assembled cells.

  • For Used Bulk Bags and Raw Material Packaging: Select the MBB line to recover both residual powder and polypropylene fabric.

  • For Contract Black Mass Production: Specify the screening and sorting stages according to the particle size and purity requirements of your refiner.

  • For Facilities Processing Multiple Waste Streams: The modular system architecture allows you to commission one line initially and add other configurations as processing volumes increase.

  • For Facilities Processing Cells Without Prior Discharge: Confirm the nitrogen-filling provisions and multi-level fire protection options during system design.
