Wind Turbine Blade Recycling System – ToronWTB™
The Wind Turbine Blade Recycling System (ToronWTB™) provides an integrated solution for recycling and processing decommissioned wind turbine blades. It converts pre-cut blade sections into separated fibers, fine powder, and recovered materials suitable for reuse. Designed for composite recycling facilities, wind farm decommissioning contractors, and downstream manufacturers, the system processes the glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) structures that make wind turbine blades challenging to handle with conventional shredding equipment. Torontech designed the ToronWTB™ as a connected processing line incorporating feeding, crushing, sorting, fine shredding, and grinding stages.
Blade sections are first cut into block-shaped pieces during upstream dismantling and large-block cutting operations. These sections enter the ToronWTB™ through its feeding system and chain conveyor before reaching the crushing system for primary size reduction. Magnetic separation and sorting remove metal contaminants and divide the processed material into fiber and small-block fractions. These fractions then move through the fine shredding and grinding stages, producing fiber and powder outputs with particle sizes down to 40 or 80 mesh.
The complete processing line operates with negative-pressure dust removal, an intelligent fire protection system, noise reduction measures, and intelligent operation and maintenance monitoring. These integrated systems address the specific processing hazards associated with glass fiber and resin composites, particularly the generation of fine, potentially combustible dust during grinding operations.
Applications
The ToronWTB™ is designed for operations that process decommissioned wind turbine blades into reusable fibers, powder, and manufacturing feedstock instead of disposing of the material in landfills.
-
Wind Farm Decommissioning: Processes blade sections recovered during turbine repowering and end-of-life decommissioning projects.
-
GFRP and Composite Recycling Facilities: Reduces fiberglass reinforced polymer waste from wind turbine blades, panels, tanks, and pipes through shredding and grinding into a processable form.
-
Wood-Plastic Composite (WPC) Manufacturing: Provides ground fiber material for use as feedstock in WPC board production.
-
Construction Product Manufacturing: Supplies recovered fibers and powder for manufacturing products such as drainage channels, anti-glare boards, manhole covers, and pallets.
-
Balsa Core Material Recovery: Separates and recovers balsa wood core material from the sandwich construction of wind turbine blade sections.

Key Features
The ToronWTB™ integrates coarse crushing, material sorting, fine shredding, and grinding into a continuous processing line specifically engineered for the complex composition of wind turbine blade materials.
-
Efficient Shredding: The crushing system breaks down bulky, pre-cut blade sections into manageable pieces while handling their mixed laminate and core construction without stalling.
-
Fine Output Grinding: Dedicated fine shredding and grinding systems reduce processed materials to 40 or 80 mesh powder for use as manufacturing feedstock.
-
Fiber Separation: Integrated sorting and magnetic separation stages distinguish fiber-rich laminate material from core materials and metal contaminants.
-
Negative Pressure Dust Removal: Controls and contains fine glass fiber and resin dust produced during grinding, helping maintain a cleaner working environment.
-
Intelligent Fire Protection System: Addresses potential fire hazards associated with combustible dust generated when grinding glass fiber and resin composite materials.
-
Environmental Noise Reduction System: Helps minimize operating noise produced by the crushing and grinding equipment.
-
Intelligent Operation and Maintenance System: Monitors processing line performance to support continuous operation with minimal manual intervention.
Theory and Method

Wind turbine blades present significant shredding challenges because their construction consists of multiple composite layers rather than a uniform material. The outer shell and spar, which is the primary structural beam extending along the length of the blade, consist of thick glass fiber laminates bonded together with structural adhesive. Inside, a lightweight core material, typically balsa wood, is positioned between fiber skins to increase structural stiffness without adding excessive weight. The root section, where the blade connects to the hub through bolted connections, contains the thickest and most heavily reinforced laminate. The combination of durable fiber laminates, soft core materials, and adhesive bonding layers makes it difficult to process the entire blade cross-section efficiently through a single cutting or grinding operation.

The ToronWTB™ overcomes this challenge through a multi-stage size reduction process instead of relying on a single processing pass. Initially, the crushing system performs coarse reduction of the pre-cut blade blocks, breaking down the laminate and core structure into smaller, more consistent pieces. The sorting system then separates the processed material according to its type and size. This allows the fiber-rich laminate fraction and softer core fraction to proceed through the fine shredding and grinding stages suited to their respective material characteristics, avoiding the need to process dissimilar materials together.
The fine shredding and grinding systems further reduce the separated materials to the required particle size, specified in mesh. In this configuration, the target output is 40 or 80 mesh. Grinding the fiber composite material to this level releases short glass fibers from the resin matrix, generating fiber and powder outputs suitable for downstream manufacturing. These recovered materials can be incorporated into products such as WPC boards or used as filler materials, providing reusable feedstock instead of bulky composite fragments that would require additional processing before recovery.
