Desk Sputter & Carbon Coater – DSCR
The Desk Sputter & Carbon Coater DSCR is a compact benchtop coating system that brings sputtering and carbon coating together in a single instrument. It sputters noble metals such as gold (Au), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and gold/palladium (Au/Pd) onto non-conductive or poorly conductive specimens, and it can also deposit carbon films onto samples.
Applications
The DSCR desk sputter coater was developed as a sample preparation tool for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A built-in rotary pump reaches a vacuum level below 50 mTorr, a range that suits both noble metal sputter coating and carbon fiber evaporation coating.
For sputter deposition of oxidizing metals, Field Emission SEM (FE-SEM), SEM with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM EDX), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) sample preparation, other models such as the DST1, DSCT, and DCT are recommended, as they are better matched to these requirements.
Features and Advantages
- Simple, straightforward operation
- Intuitive touchscreen for managing the coating process and entering data quickly
- Easy-to-use software with both fully automatic and semi-automatic control modes
- Quick, effortless specimen loading and unloading
- Consistent film thickness for repeatable results
- Precise, reproducible coatings
- High-resolution fine coatings, with gold grain size on the order of 2 nm
- Low-voltage sputtering
- GLAD (Glancing Angle Deposition) sputtering
- Plasma cleaning
- No cooling system required
- Carbon coating in both flash and pulse modes
- Dual carbon fiber configuration for thicker layer deposition
- Two-year warranty for added peace of mind
- CE conformity, confirming compliance with safety standards
- Worldwide public and product liability insurance coverage, protecting against property damage or personal injury caused by Vac Coat systems
Pulsed Carbon Fiber Evaporation
The compact chamber of this desk vacuum sputter and carbon coater supports pulsed carbon fiber evaporation. Short pulses give finer, more controlled deposition and significantly reduce the debris commonly associated with conventional carbon deposition.
Carbon Coating Head
The DSCR features an interchangeable carbon coating head. It can hold two carbon fibers, each 0.8 mm in diameter, making it possible to deposit thicker carbon films whenever an application calls for them.

Color Touchscreen Control
The DSCR, also referred to as the Desk SEM Coater, comes with a 7-inch color touchscreen that provides full automatic control and data entry. The interface is simple enough for users with limited experience. Vacuum levels, current readings, and deposition details can be monitored directly on the screen, shown either as digital values or as graphical curves. The system also stores data from the last 300 coatings, which can be reviewed easily on the history page.

Sample Stages
The DSCR supports several sample stage configurations to meet different user needs. The stages rotate, offer adjustable height, and are easy to swap. The rotary planetary sample stage is especially well suited to achieving uniform coatings, particularly on porous specimens.

Theory and Method
The Desk Sputter and Carbon Coater includes a rotary pump and can be configured for DC sputtering and carbon fiber (thread) coating using interchangeable heads, all within one instrument. The DSCR is a flexible machine built for preparing samples for scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
To observe non-conductive or poorly conductive specimens in a scanning electron microscope, their surface conductivity must be raised during sample preparation before SEM imaging.
Sputter deposition and carbon evaporation are both standard sample preparation methods in electron microscopy. The full automation option keeps the system easy to run, even for operators with minimal experience. Software with graphical interfaces makes deposition information easier to interpret and improves overall usability.
