Air Permeability Tester – ToronAPT™ 5636

Automatic Gurley-Method Air Permeability and Air Resistance Tester

The ToronAPT™ 5636 is an automatic air permeability tester designed to measure air permeability and air resistance of paper, nonwoven fabrics, textiles, battery separator membranes, and other porous materials. Based on the Gurley method, the instrument automates specimen clamping, pressure control, testing, and result output for consistent operation. A touchscreen interface and built-in micro-printer provide convenient operation and on-site result reporting. Measurement results can be displayed in Gurley seconds and µm/Pa·s to meet the requirements of different testing standards and applications.

The automatic pressure-control system sets and maintains the required differential pressure throughout the test. It provides the standard 1.22 kPa Gurley test pressure, with an adjustable pressure range up to 20 kPa for testing materials with different air permeability characteristics. Interchangeable test heads with areas of 1.0, 0.25, and 0.1 in² provide testing flexibility across various specimen types and permeability ranges. High-accuracy sensors and real-time test-curve display help deliver precise and repeatable measurement results.

The ToronAPT™ 5636 air permeability tester is suitable for battery, paper, nonwoven, textile, and membrane testing laboratories requiring standards-based air permeability and air resistance measurements. Built-in data query functions and a traceable calibration procedure support organized test records and quality-control documentation. With a compact 20 kg benchtop design, the instrument is suitable for laboratories with limited workspace and requires only a compressed-air supply for operation.

Air Permeability Tester – ToronAPT™ 5636 Applications

The ToronAPT™ 5636 provides air permeability and air resistance measurements for porous and air-permeable materials where breathability, porosity, and air barrier properties influence product performance and quality.

  • Battery Separator Membranes: Measures air permeability of lithium-ion and other battery separator membranes to support evaluation of separator structure and quality.

  • Paper and Paperboard: Determines air resistance and porosity of paper, tissue, paperboard, and related materials using the Gurley method.

  • Nonwoven Fabrics: Evaluates air permeability of nonwoven materials used in hygiene products, medical applications, filtration, and other industries.

  • Textiles and Apparel: Measures the air permeability of woven and knitted fabrics to evaluate fabric breathability and airflow characteristics.

  • Heat-Exchange and Filtration Membranes: Characterizes air transport through membranes used in energy-recovery systems and filtration applications.

  • Filter Media and Filter Papers: Measures air resistance of filter papers and media to support consistent material and filtration performance.

  • Cigarette and Specialty Papers: Evaluates the porosity and air resistance of tipping paper, plug-wrap paper, and other specialty paper products.

  • Coated and Laminated Papers: Assesses air barrier properties of coated and laminated paper structures for quality control and product development.

Air Permeability Tester Standards

The ToronAPT™ 5636 is designed for air permeability and air resistance testing according to recognized Gurley-method standards used across paper, nonwoven, and related material testing applications.

  • ISO 5636-5: Paper and board — Determination of air permeance and air resistance (medium range) — Part 5: Gurley method

  • ASTM D726: Standard Test Method for Resistance of Nonporous Paper to Passage of Air

  • TAPPI T460: Air Resistance of Paper (Gurley Method)

  • TAPPI T536: Resistance of Paper to Passage of Air (High-Pressure Gurley Method)

Air Permeability Tester – ToronAPT™ 5636 Key Features

The ToronAPT™ 5636 combines automatic Gurley-method air permeability and air resistance testing with touchscreen operation, integrated data management, and a compact benchtop configuration. • Standard Communication Interface: Enables connection with external systems for convenient test-data transfer and laboratory integration.

Theory and Method

The Gurley method determines the air permeability and air resistance of porous materials by measuring the time required for a defined volume of air to pass through a specimen under controlled pressure. The ToronAPT™ 5636 securely clamps the specimen over the selected test head, applies a controlled differential pressure, and directs air through the material. The standard Gurley test pressure is 1.22 kPa, while the test-head area determines the exposed specimen area during measurement.

Air resistance is expressed in Gurley seconds, representing the time required for a specified volume of air, typically 100 cm³, to pass through the specimen. Materials with lower air permeability generally require more time and produce higher Gurley values. Air permeance, expressed in µm/Pa·s, indicates how readily air passes through a material under a given pressure difference and test area. The instrument calculates the relevant measurement from the recorded pressure and airflow data.

High-accuracy pressure and flow sensors continuously monitor test conditions, while the automatic pressure-control system maintains the required differential pressure throughout the measurement. This helps minimize variations caused by changing test conditions and supports repeatable results.

Interchangeable test heads and adjustable pressure settings allow the ToronAPT™ 5636 air permeability tester to accommodate materials with different permeability levels, from relatively dense battery separator membranes to highly air-permeable nonwoven fabrics, using a single testing platform.
